History of The Suffolk Education Foundation

The mission of the Suffolk Education Foundation is to support Suffolk Public Schools by connecting the community’s talents and resources to expand educational opportunities for students and staff.

With the commitment of the community, our public school students will develop their full potential, ensuring that Suffolk will continue to thrive and proper. A community’s quality of life is directly tied to its education system as it prepares tomorrow’s citizen leaders and professionals.

The SEF was founded in 1993 as a 501(c)3 charitable organization. Since our beginning, the board has been actively developing a variety of fund-raisers to increase donations. Our hard work ensures that students and staff have the ability to receive college scholarships and instructional grants each year, in addition to reaping the benefits of special projects in STEM education, staff development, and more.

Over the last 22 years, SEF investment assets have grown to more than $600,000. All money raised is appropriated to the students and staff of Suffolk Public Schools.

The Foundation has provided more than $300,000 in scholarships and tuition assistance to help students continue their studies after high school. The Foundation will award $20,000 in scholarships to the Class of 2016.

In addition, SEF has awarded more than $300,000 in instructional grants and professional development. In many instances, assistance from SEF is the only way these critical activities are funded. These grants have provided field trips, hands-on science lessons, online reading projects, and much more. For the 2015-16 school year, the Foundation provided close to $22,000 to support classroom projects in eight schools as well as a division-wide elementary summer school expansion, reading program, and Farm Day project.

To continue to thrive, sponsors are essential partners for growth. Sponsors are recognized in several ways
at these events to highlight their support. Businesses receive goodwill from their involvement and Suffolk’s quality-of-life is enhanced by a first-class educational system.

Endowments … The Suffolk Education Foundation currently has seven scholarship endowments. The board of directors is proud to manage these assets in a prudent manner so the endowment funds will be available for years to come. The Foundation welcomes your interest in setting up a perpetual gift to benefit Suffolk Public Schools.

Cash Donations … Your direct financial donation enables us to channel resources where they are most needed. Unfortunately, a lack of funding sometimes excludes Suffolk students and staff from taking advantage of many learning opportunities.  SEF is a source for Suffolk Public Schools when budgets are constrained, but opportunities for enrichment abound.

Memorial & Honorary Donations … As a charitable organization, the Foundation is able to accept memorial and honorary donations and can provide a receipt to be used for tax-exempt purposes. SEF will work closely with you to ensure that your gift is used to honor your loved one.
