Scholarships for 2012
It is never too early to be thinking about how to pay for your education after high school. The Suffolk Education Foundation is here to help! We have 9 endowments that are worth $1000 each for students going on to a four-year college or university.
In addition, the SEF Board created 3 new scholarships each worth $1000 for students who will be preparing for work in career and technical education. There are scholarships for everyone - please check out which category fits your interests and studies!
Eleven Seniors are Awarded $11,000
The Suffolk Education Foundation is pleased to announce the recipients of its 2012 college scholarships. This year, the Foundation awarded $11,000 to help 11 local high school graduates continue their education. Since 1993, the Foundation has committed more than $230,000 in college scholarships for local high school students.
Each of the students below will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
The three recipients of the annual Jean and Harry L. Cross, Jr. Endowment Scholarship are Sarah Cook of Nansemond River High School, Tyler Mizelle of Lakeland High School, and Alana Glover of King’s Fork High School. Cook plans to study music education at Tidewater Community College. Mizelle plans to study mechanical engineering at Virginia Tech. Glover will attend Virginia Commonwealth University to study criminal justice and political science. The Cross family established this scholarship to honor their father, a Suffolk realtor who served on the School Board.
The three recipients of the annual Helen and Ned Ferguson Endowment Scholarship are Kimberly Williams of Nansemond River High School, Jennifer Asbell of Lakeland High School, and Ethan Gould of King’s Fork High School. Williams plans to attend Norfolk State University to study business marketing. Gould will be attending the University of Virginia to study English and psychology. The Ferguson family established this scholarship to honor their father, a local lawyer and community leader.
Additionally, the foundation administers endowed scholarships for the families of Gertrude B. Pruden and the
Hon. G. Blair Harry. Jacqueline Metzger of King's Fork High School received the $1,000 Gertrude B. Pruden Family Arts Scholarship. She will be attending James Madison University to study studio art and interior design. Seth Fisher of Lakeland High School and Travis Johnson of Nansemond River High School received the G. Blair Harry Memorial Scholarship Awards. Fisher will attend Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va. to study history and to play soccer. Johnson is headed to Methodist University in Fayetteville, N.C. to study business administration and golf management and to play golf. The Harry family established this scholarship to honor their father, who was a well-known Suffolk lawyer and judge who passed away in 2005.
Michelle Skinner of King's Fork High School and Heather Miles of Lakeland High School received the Suffolk
Education Foundation’s Career and Technical Education Scholarships. These scholarships are designed to assist students continuing their high school CTE studies at a community college or trade program. Skinner plans to study at Tidewater Community College to continue in food & hospitality services. Miles will attend Paul D. Camp Community College to study nursing, after discovering her leadership skills in agricultural science classes.
Awards are made following an application process and review by a committee from the Suffolk Education Foundation’s board of directors. Selection criteria include academic achievement, community/school service, and future education and career goals.
Anyone interested in contributing to the scholarship funds of the Suffolk Education Foundation can send their tax-deductible donation to P.O. Box 394, Suffolk VA 23439-0394. Please note to which fund your contribution should be credited. General donations are also accepted to help the Foundation in its other programs, including classroom instructional grants, Teacher of the Year and Star Award employee recognitions, staff development, and tuition assistance for high school students taking dual-credit college courses.
