Success Stories

To the Suffolk Education Foundation:

I am writing to you to express my gratitude for the Wilburn Wilson Future Educator Scholarship. I was excited to learn that I was a recipient of this scholarship award. I finished high school in June, and recently began my journey at the University of Mary Washington. I want to share my journey with you so far, and let you know that I am very thankful for your scholarship.

I moved in just a few weeks ago, and due to COVID-19 everything has been "unordinary", yet I feel as if Mary Washington has done everything possible to make sure we still have an amazing experience. Our dining hall is now outside in big tents; we have beach chairs to sit in with our friends; and most importantly, our professors have gone above and beyond to make sure we are okay.

I plan to major in Elementary and Special Education with a minor in Sports Management as I hope to become a golf coach while teaching Early Childhood Special Education. This semester I am taking 16 credits, and love all of my classes, especially my coaching and education courses. I have made amazing friends and have become very involved. I am on the golf team and serving as a GEAR UP Student Ambassador for the state of Virginia. I have also joined a few clubs such as Best Buddies along with a faith-based group on campus - all in this short period.

Your scholarship award has allowed me to focus on school and becoming involved as a student by reducing the financial burden of college. Your generosity has helped me to have so much fun while finding ways to give back to the greater community.

I hope that one day I will be able to help students experience an amazing college journey the way that you have helped me. While I am still at the beginning of my college career at Mary Washington, it has already been a rewarding journey like no other.
